The American Music Awards 2018 came on last night and I thought it was a pretty good show. I will be posting videos of the performances later on but overall I thought everyone did well. Tracee Ellis Ross was the host for the night and she was ok in my opinion. Her dance opening was good and her outfits was good, but overall I could’ve did without. There were a couple of performances that stood for either best vocals or best performance. So best performance and dance clearly goes to Ciara (Janet Jr.), if I was an artist and had to perform after Ciara..I wouldn’t. She showed up and showed out! She proved to everyone why she is one of the best performers of our time. And the fact she brought one of my favorite female rappers out on stage with her Missy Misdemeanor Elliot just nailed it for me.
Best Vocals of course goes to my wife Mariah Carey with her new single “With You”. Not only did she look stunning in that pink dress but vocally she sounded great. Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin performed “I like it like that” which is one of my favorite’s songs by her. She probably had the biggest budget for the night, it was dancing, colors, props and wigs almost falling off. I was just telling Aizen that I hope she level up her stage presence, because the first couple of performances was a snooze.
Dua Lipa also performed and if you don’t know who Dua Lipa is here is a short description; London born, Kosovo raised. Her critically acclaimed debut has made everyone’s “best of” list, from The FADER to Rolling Stone to Time Magazine. With her powerful anthem and viral video for “New Rules” making her the youngest female solo artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube, Dua continues to find herself on the top of the charts. The track reached #1 on Billboard’s Pop Songs airplay chart, and broke the longstanding record for the most weeks ever on the list. She was consistently the most streamed female artist on Spotify and in the top 5 globally this past year. She has sold 3 million copies, with singles reaching 32 million sold. Most recently, Dua made BRIT Award history becoming the first woman artist to pick up five nominations, taking home the awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist.
Ella Mai performed her hit single “Boo’d Up”. Executive produced by Mustard, the throwback R&B album, simply titled Ella Mai, is due Friday, October 12th. The British singer-songwriter continues to break long held records with her RIAA Certified Triple-Platinum single, “Boo’d Up.” The 23-year-old has solidified her standing as the first woman since Beyonce in 2012 to hit No.1 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Adult R&B Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts. “Boo’d Up” has also now tied Mary J Blige’s “Be Without You” as the longest running #1 by a female artist in R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart history. The breakout star will also be joining the esteemed Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic World Tour beginning in October.
