ASCAP Screen Music Awards 2019 to Honor Michael Giacchino, Pinar Toprak, Pasek and Paul

ASCAP has revealed the major honorees for its 2019 Screen Music Awards and the list includes music creators behind such smash successes as CocoThe Incredibles, online video game Fortnite and more.

Among the newly-announced honorees are composers Michael Giacchino and Pinar Toprak as well as songwriting team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers announced Thursday (March 28).

Giacchino, an Oscar, Emmy and multi-Grammy winner, will receive the prestigious ASCAP Henry Mancini Award. The composer is best known for scoring blockbuster films including Pixar’s The Incredibles and Up, which earned him an Oscar for best original score in 2009. His extensive resume also includes Star TrekMission: Impossible — Ghost ProtocolCoco and the upcoming Spider-Man: Far from Home.

Toprak — who became the first woman to score a Marvel film with her score for Captain Marvel — will receive the ASCAP Shirley Walker Award, named for a pioneer for women working in the film industry. Toprak also co-composed the score to the wildly successful, Drakeapproved Fortnite.

Pasek and Paul, the formidable Oscar, Grammy, Tony and Golden Globe-winning songwriters known for their work on Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land and The Greatest Showman, will be recognized with the ASCAP Vanguard Award — which the organization says “salutes ASCAP members whose innovative work is helping to shape the future of music.” This is the first time the award has been presented to music creators specifically regarded for their film and musical theatre accomplishments (past winners include Dua LipaJanelle Monáe, The Killers and others).

The Screen Music Awards, now in its 34th year, honors composers and songwriters of top box office film music, top-rated TV series and the most performed television music of the last year. The organization will dole out its 2019 awards at a ceremony and dinner in Beverly Hills on May 15.
