The Spotify Kids app is only available in Ireland but will expand to all other markets soon.
Spotify has announced the launch of a new Spotify Kids app as a way to “create a playground of sound” for its youngest listeners. The new standalone app, which is being beta tested in Ireland only, is geared for kids 3 and up and has a unique look and content catalog based on the user’s age.
The new app will be available to anyone with a Family Plan subscription, meaning it will be free of ads. The content, via a host of providers including Nickelodeon, Disney, Discovery Kids, and Universal Pictures, will be curated by a team of Spotify editors and laid out as playlists. The user experience is “bursting with color,” simple to navigate and heavy on visuals rather than text.
“As we evolve the Spotify Kids experience over time, we plan to enhance parental control features to allow for even more customization,” said Alex Norström, Spotify’s chief premium business officer, in a Q&A on Spotify’s blog. “We’ll also bring our audio expertise to the table with listening experiences that go beyond music — like more stories and audiobooks and eventually podcasts.”
Norström said the company spent more than two years studying the kids space, gathering insights from the National Children’s Museum in Washington, D.C. as well as their own employees.
Spotify said it plans to expand Spotify Kids to all markets with Premium Family options in the coming months, following beta testing in Ireland.
“Having a standalone app specifically for younger kids is a new space for Spotify, and we understand the sensitivities around content for children,” added Norström. “We are being very deliberate in our launch approach. We’ve started with a beta launch in Ireland, knowing that this initial roll-out phase will yield many learnings from parents, caregivers and other experts as they begin to interact with the app.”
