Nava Rose, TikTok’s DIY Star, Makes Outfits Out of Handbags

Vogue.com —-

TikTok is largely dominated by trending songs, dance challenges, and overall embracing creativity, but it’s not as well known for its fashion scene. That being said, a stylish community is forming on the app—and Vogue is here to find the most inspiring, and most stylish, creators.

This week’s must-follow account is Nava Rose (@the.navarose), a 29-year-old Filipino creator based in Los Angeles, California. She’s known on TikTok for her fashion DIY projects: Rose will create entire outfits out of fake Louis Vuitton or Gucci handbags, and rate her own creations, too. (She gave a harness she made out of a Gucci bag a 10/10). Her creative TikToks often play off her impressive skill as a sewer, which she has been doing since she was young. “I’m a third-generation sewer in my family,” she says. “I was always creating, but didn’t start using a sewing machine until middle school because big machines scared me.” Even today, she still loves creating DIY’d looks for herself versus shopping for them. “There’s something so beautiful about creating something from scratch, or transforming one thing to another,” she says. “It’s so rewarding when you can look at the final product and say, ‘I made that.’”

Since posting her very first TikTok in August last year, Rose has built up a following of over 1.9 million people for her crafty projects. But at first, she was simply a spectator on the app. “I started off as everyone else who creates an account—just to watch other people’s videos,” she says. “When I first heard about TikTok, everyone said that it’s mainly for younger kids, and since I’m a bit older than the vast majority on the app, I just felt I couldn’t create good content because I wouldn’t fit in.”

Once she did dive in, however, her unexpected ensembles quickly built up a following. One of Rose’s most-viewed TikToks is the one where she made a bra top and skirt from a fake monogrammed Louis Vuitton bag and proceeded to wear it to a real Vuitton store. But some of Rose’s most popular uploads are also her simplest: her suggestions for chic monochromatic outfits has over 3 million views. Clearly, her personal style is just as good as her sewing.

Rose says partaking in TikTok has not only sharpened up her design skills, but shaped her creativity, too. “My very first video was a changing-outfits transition video and you can tell I didn’t really know what I was doing,” she says. “Let’s just say my first video was kindergarten stage, and my recent changing-outfits video is at least a high school graduate.”

Below, Rose sounds off on TikTok’s fashion community, how she makes ensembles out of bags, and what projects she has her eye on next.

1. What inspired you to make an outfit out of a fake Louis Vuitton bag?

“I have this weird side of me that loves making outfits out of unconventional items. I can literally look at a toaster oven and think, ‘how can I turn this into an outfit?’ There were photos of Louis Vuitton-print two-piece sets that were trending on my feed, and any other person would assume it was made from printed material, but in my head I originally thought they were made out of bags. So I thought it would be fun to recreate the look. The bag was from one of those sketchy Asian fashion websites that sell everything from fake handbags to tires. It took me 8-10 hours, since I had no previous experience with cutting and sewing handbags. I had no idea what I was doing. [Going to the Vuitton store in that outfit] is a moment I can’t wait to tell my grandchildren about. In the store, no one actually went up to me, but I remember a worker was shocked to find out my outfit was made from a handbag.”

2. Do you have your eyes on any other bags to do this with?

“After my Louis Vuitton set, I actually did a fake Gucci set. Next handbag on my list to butcher is a Fendi or Dior.”

3. What is your favorite TikTok you’ve ever made? What took the longest?

“My favorite one is probably my first Disney Princess styling video, because it was so fun to imagine what these princesses would like if they walked out of my closet. As for the longest, my very first video took over 4 hours to make, because I didn’t know how to do transitions, let alone how to even work the app. I don’t know why I decided to pick such a complex concept for my first TikTok. Now it only takes me an hour at most for an outfits-transition video.”

4. What’s your process for creating TikToks?

“First and foremost, I pick a song. The way I will end up shooting my video is all based off of the song, because going off the beat lets me know how many outfits I can squeeze into one video. From there I will put together all the outfits I want to feature and shoot away! Usually my ideas randomly pop into my mind. I’m always thinking of outfits and styling, so most of the time I’m thinking, ‘how can I make this into an outfit?’ That is how my Disney Princess styling video was born. However, recently I’ve been doing more videos that my followers request. I love them so much, so what they ask, they shall receive.”TikTok: Courtesy of @thenavarose

5. What do you think about the potential TikTok ban in the US?

“From my understanding, TikTok here in the U.S. is pretty secure, so I’m not too worried about it. If the ban does happen it would totally suck since TikTok is my biggest platform, but I’ll still continue to create on Instagram and Youtube.”

6. What is the most special piece in your closet?

“My most special piece has to be my baby blue fur coat seen in this post. My furry baby boy [her dog Oliver] passed away late 2019, and I made a fur coat out of the blanket he was wrapped in when he passed away.”TikTok: Courtesy of @thenavaroseTikTok: Courtesy of @thenavarosehttps://tpc.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.htmlTopicsBig on TikTok
