#CancelNetflix is trending online and this is why.
The streaming platform has a new comedy-drama series but it’s already getting a bad name. The movie is called Cuties and in the promotional image, you see young girls in bikini-like clothing and dancing provocative (touching themselves). The trailer accumulated 1.6 million dislikes on YouTube. The director, Maïmouna Doucouré, also received death threats and removed herself off social media, USA Today reports.
The movie is about a girl named Amy Diop (Fathia Youssouf), 11. Amy is of Senegalese descent, but she lives in France with her “observant Muslim family.” Amy is quiet and shy but is “fascinated with a twerking dance crew.” The New Yorker reports the film “dramatizes the difficulties of growing up female in a sexualized and commercialized media culture.
Creed actress Tessa Thompson saw the award-winning French film before it got released on Netflix and spoke highly of it. She said,
“#CUTIES is a beautiful film. It gutted me at @sundancefest. It introduces a fresh voice at the helm. She’s a French Senegalese Black woman mining her experiences. The film comments on the hyper-sexualization of preadolescent girls. Disappointed to see the current discourse.”

However, online users highly disagree, take a look:
Even if this film eventually makes that point, from the clips I’ve seen, there’s too much sexuality and pedo opportunities before it does. I’m disappointed that these ideas are being normalized. Protect children always.

In the parent’s guide, it’s rated TV-MA which isn’t for children. Some of the content warnings include an 11-year-old watching naked women and partake in lesbian acts. There’s also female breast nudity and a scene where an 11-year-old’s pants are pulled down and her panties are exposed. A young girl also tried to take a picture of a boy’s penis, another young girl took a picture of her vagina and posted it online and the young girls also “twerk” for a security guard to let them through an area.
OK FUCKING CONTENT WARNING FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANNA READ THIS LIKE LEGIT, THIS CONTAINS DESCRIPTIONS OF BORDERLINE CSEM.

A $125 billion company actually released this film promoting pedophilia. How is Netflix allowed to release something like this? How was this allowed to even be filmed? This is sickening! #CancelNetflix #Cuties #BoycottNetflix pic.twitter.com/FkM7HlWCn2

Under no circumstances should videos of underage children performing acts as seen in #Cuties be allowed to exist especially on a huge and influential platform like Netflix. The normalisation of this is disgusting. #cancelnetflix pic.twitter.com/ZWdVr3O1Hb
