What is: shocking?
Burton, 64, received 14% of the votes, while Richards, 46, only got a measly 3%, Mediaite reported, despite stepping into the coveted role as Alex Trebek’s successor.
But the poll results might not be a surprise to some who wanted Burton to host the iconic game show — despite low ratings during his week which competed with the Olympics.
When Richards and co-host Mayim Bialik, the 45-year-old “Big Bang Theory” actress, said last week that they would be the new faces of “Jeopardy!” post-Trebek, diehard fans did not take it well.
Meghan McCain tweeted, “Why couldn’t they just give it to @levarburton like literally everyone on the planet wanted?”
Ava DuVernay, director of “Selma,” also tweeted that she wanted to create a show just for Burton to host, since he didn’t secure the permanent hosting role. Burton seems eager to collaborate, responding to the director: “Check your DM’s!”
The Morning Consult poll also asked viewers if Richards “deserves a chance to host ‘Jeopardy!’” — to which 32% said yes and 25% said no.
Some viewers were rooting for Ken Jennings, who holds the record for most consecutive wins on the show, to take over as host. In the poll, Jennings, 47, received 12%.
Richards, who is largely unknown to fans, is already embroiled in controversy. Earlier this month, he pushed back against claims of discrimination after it came to light that he was involved in lawsuits relating to bias incidents.
In 2010, former model Brandi Cochran sued “The Price is Right,” for which Richards served in the production department, for discriminating against her for her pregnancy. In 2011, model Lanisha Cole sued for sexual harassment, claiming Richards and other producers on the show verbally abused her.
“I want you all to know that the way in which my comments and actions have been characterized in these complaints does not reflect the reality of who I am or how we worked together on ‘The Price is Right,’ ” he said.
